The 80s was a fantastic time for cheesy films, upbeat music and most importantly: bold fashion choices. We’re talking shoulder pads, garish patterns and ungodly short shorts. For better or worse, these brave fashion trends were eventually replaced with the more subdued outfits we got in the 90s’ and 00s’. Minimalistic fashion took over for a minute there, but now the 1980s’ is being recognised for all the cheesy goodness it brought, and the best of the 80s’ is back louder than ever.
Here are the 80s fashion trends for men that we at Mainline Menswear love to follow.
Once shunned as the most cringe-worthy of cuts, Dad Jeans are now back in full swing. At first, the too baggy, too short, too high-waisted look may seem like the worst choice possible for your trousers, but all this combined provides a flattering yet preppy look!
Match your Dad Jeans with a denim jacket if you really want to go for the 80s’ vibe. Alternatively, you can keep things simple with a logo-tee and some trainers.
Designer tracksuits are no longer considered scruffy, and we’d prefer it if you regarded them as a sort of sporty-vibe suit (though we still wouldn’t consider them for a wedding). Bring a little athleisure 80s’ back into your wardrobe and pick the brightest, most colourful matching tracksuit you can find.
If the rest of your outfit is quite normal, then there’s no easier way to make a statement than completing the look with a bomber jacket. It turns out Greece was right all along; Bomber jackets are cool – and the perfect accessory for when the weather is milder.
Take advantage of Britain’s latest heatwave and be daring with your hues. The 80s were all about bright colours, and this trend is back and easiest to pull off by the pool. Blues, greens, reds and pinks: there are no rules when it comes to your 80s colour palette. We recommend you start with swimming trunks though, as it doesn’t matter which colour you go for when you won’t have much – if anything – to match them with.

Okay, it may be pushing more into the 90s’ with this one, but bucket hats are everywhere this summer. Fun, quirky and great for the heat, buckets hats can be your new accessory for casual wear. This year our newest editorial was based in our home county, the picturesque North Yorkshire. Home of the rolling moors, Yorkshire puddings, a lot of steel but ironically not Yorkshire Tea (that’s grown in Sri Lanka for the most part). In a ’50s infused home, we decided to take advantage of the inspiring décor and added a few timeless classics into the shoot. From retro cars to the statement clothing we styled, our latest collection is all about contemporary classics.
So make a statement using a bit of the past. Bucket hats, eye-catching logo tees, and casually smart polo shirts all feature. Hues are kept subtle this time around, whilst the cut and style of the clothing helps your outfit make an impact.
Kicking things off with denim, this year we’ve been motivated by the 80s’, and Dad jeans are back in style. Complete this look with an oversized t-shirt and some retro trainers for a relaxed yet preppy twist. Also, don’t be afraid to go double denim and make a denim jacket your go-to layering piece for a truly vintage look.
Our next new trend is another timeless classic, and the polo shirt is ready to turn your casual wardrobe sophisticated. Go for block colours today and keep things chic with some dark denim to match.
Finally, word on the street is that logo tees are also making a comeback. Logomania is a craze we can all get behind and is the easiest way to stand out without putting in a lot of effort. You can forget about spray-on jeans and muscle hugging t-shirts. Hip-hop fashion has won this season’s latest trend and over-sized clothing is the next biggest thing – literally. Think Kayne West’s chunky hoodies for casual wear, Virgil Abloh’s wide-angled suits for formal.
Oversized clothing is nothing new, and if you carry this look off well you will be oozing 80’s fashion vibes. This trend is flattering, comfortable but difficult to achieve. How can you wear oversized clothes without looking like you don’t know your size? Here we go through all your large clothing how-tos and why you need to give this year’s biggest fashion trend a go.
No! I know what you’re thinking. What’s so hard about this? I’ll just by an XXL t-shirt rather than my usual medium. Well sorry everyone, but it’s not that easy. If you just buy clothes that are too big for you then it won’t look intentional, they will just look silly.
I know this rule seems counterintuitive, but you will look like a schoolboy whose mother is waiting for him to grow into his uniform if you just buy randomly. You need to shop for clothes that are specifically designed to be oversized. Oversized pieces provide the additional cut you need to look like the larger size is on purpose and stops things looking accidental.
Not every item you’re wearing should feel like pyjamas (unfortunately) and it’s important to balance the oversized outfit out with a few slimmer pieces that actually fit. Think over-sized jumper paired with skinny jeans, or billowing trousers with a tailored shirt. Don’t go all baggy unless you want to look like you’re on your way to bed.
We’re a big fan of layering here, and this is a perfect technique if you want to go for a softer approach. The bonus to oversized clothing is that it’s easy to layer on top of a normal-sized piece. Not sure what to wear? Just throw on a normal t-shirt and then layer with an oversized hoodie, shirt, jacket or coat. Easy peasy.
Our last rule is one you could break if you’re feeling extra brave, but for everyone else, we recommend you stick to neutral colours when it comes to picking your oversized piece. Whether you go for an oversized coat, trouser, t-shirt or jumper, the statement with this outfit is the size, so you don’t need to make another statement with the colour. Subtle hues like white, grey and navy will leave you looking sophisticated yet casual.

Summer is finally here and with it a whole new set of questions for what you can wear to the office. Is that Hawaiian shirt inappropriate? Do I really have to wear a blazer when it’s this hot? Can you wear flip flops to the office? Today we’re going to concentrate on that final question (though if you’re wondering about the other two, I would say probably yes, no, respectfully) and discuss the pros and cons of wearing sliders and flip flops to the office.
Designer sliders are a fashion must-have this year. Whether you wear them to work or just to the beach. They’re versatile, comfortable and perfect for keeping cool in the hotter weather. But there are a few things we need to consider before you slip them on for the Monday morning rush hour.
Obviously, if you’re expected to wear a suit and tie then flip flops are a definite no-go. Why are you even asking the question in the first place? For jobs with a strict dress code, you’re going to need to forget the sliders. A cooler option you could perhaps get away with wearing a suit is loafers.
If, however, your dress code is a little less formal (looking at you, Mainline Menswear developers) then flip flops are an option you can consider, but you need to choose wisely. Garish, cheap-looking sandals aren’t going to make the cut. Try to go for a designer pair of sliders that aren’t too loud. We don’t want your casual footwear to be the centrepiece of the outfit, it needs to blend in. Stick to black, browns and subtle blues when it comes to your office sliders.
When it comes to the office, if your shoes are going casual then another piece of your outfit has to pick up the slack. This is why you should leave your colourful logo t-shirts at home for this one. Try to keep your colour pallet neutral and smart.
Also, it’s important you don’t go for this look unless it really is very hot outside. We don’t care how casual your office is with the dress code, no one likes the guy who wears flip flops all year round. Don’t be that guy.
