Expert’s Warning For Australians Looking To Pile Into ‘The Next GameStop’

In case you've been living under a rock these last few weeks, one of the biggest news stories of 2021 so far has been the GameStop short squeeze.

The struggling American video game retailer has seen its share price absolutely skyrocket thanks to retail investors backing the stock, largely led by Reddit's /r/wallstreetbets community (WSB). This has fuelled one of the most brutal 'short squeezes' in living memory, which has increased GameStop's stock price by almost 190 times from its record low of $2.57 to nearly $500 per share, with institutional short sellers losing money hand over foot.

It's been a giddy few days for those with an interest in finance, with the entire world waiting to see who blinks first – the little guys or the big end of town – as well as to see where WSB takes the market next.

Now it seems WSB is picking a fight with short sellers on the commodity market, with retail investors throwing their weight behind silver. The spot price has surged to a five-month high, which has also had the byproduct of pushing Australian mining shares up.

"There is this curious situation now where the Reddit crowd has turned its sights on a bigger whale in terms of trying to catalyse something of a short squeeze in the silver market," Kyle Rodda, an analyst at brokerage IG Markets in Melbourne, shared with Reuters.

“The most important factor here is that silver is heavily shorted, the paper market is much, much larger than the underlying commodity can justify."

So is silver going to be the next $GME? DMARGE spoke exclusively with James Whelan, VFS Group Investment Manager and in-house markets commentator, who shared some thoughts with us about investing in on the shiny stuff.

"There is a lot of misinformation being fed to the market about how shorted silver really is," he relates.

With some Redditors having made literally hundreds of thousands of dollars overnight with their investments in GameStop, other amateur investors are naturally licking their lips at the prospect of making it rich on silver – as well as the prospect of causing extra pain to short sellers. But Wheland cautions that commodities like silver are a very different beast to stock:

"The 'market cap' on a commodity like silver is colossally greater to a share like $GME. Silver's also a real, tangible thing... It's not as manipulatable, and you're also going up against serious regulations and regulators."

"To an extent, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Can it be done? Theoretically, yes. Will it be done? Maybe."

As of publication, the spot price of silver comes in at 37.45 AUD per ounce – a five-month high. Time will tell how crazy silver will get – but regardless of how long or how intense this current speculation will turn out to be, Whelan relates that, for him, silver is worth investing in.

"The market hates uncertainty, and firms won't want their clients' super[annuation] money in the middle of the market with all these kids on Reddit."

"But with stimulus packages on the way in the US, we'll see inflation... Gold and silver are still havens. Essentially, even if they weren't in it, I'd want to be in it."

Food for thought indeed.

Australian ‘House Porn’ Trend A Symptom Of A Nation Gone Mad With Property

News flash: Australia isn't about crocodiles and kangaroos any more. It's about oat milk lattes and f*ck off mansions.

Talking about property prices has become a national obsession and there's a good reason for it: house prices in Australia – for desirable suburbs at least – have lost the plot.

Sydney, for instance, today commands some of the highest prices for property (compared to residents' average annual salaries) anywhere in the world, with residents willing to spend more of a percentage of their paycheck on a home than Londoners or New Yorkers, some studies have found. As previously explained to DMARGE by Investment Manager James Whelan, this mindset comes with both pros and cons.

RELATED: Sydney Man's 'Unbearable' Experience Reveals The Perils Of Moving Too Far Away From The City

What's not up for debate is that the housing market in Australia's most populous city is a far cry from how it used to be in the 1970s, when prices would only be around five times the annual salary. Today, that number has risen to around 12.

The ABC this morning reported Australian house prices have returned to record highs, even exceeding the peak reached in 2017.

But high prices (usually) also bring with them some incredible architecture or stunning, unobstructed views...at least, if you find yourself in the right area. And with that, also comes the ideation of 'house porn'; homes so beautiful in their design and aesthetic, that we simply can't get enough of seeing enough of them... and how much they cost.

Case in point: this Reddit thread that asks Australians to reveal what $1 million dollars would buy in their "neck of the woods."

The original poster says he was going through "bit of a 'house porn' phase lately, comparing how little I'd get in my area with other parts of Australia."

His 'area' happens to be the Eastern Suburbs, easily one of Sydney's most sought-after precincts, where house prices can easily stretch from seven into eight figures, and include properties such as this ultimate man pad. He begrudgingly admits that "being the eastern suburbs of Sydney, you're not getting a house for < $1,000,000 [sic]."

He, therefore, posts a sold listing for a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in Rose Bay with a generous 72 m2 of floor area that was snapped up for $975,000.

Many users were quick to post what they could get for a cool million in their own respective areas (something to be discussed in more detail below).

Others posited this 'house porn' trend could explain Australia's housing market bubble. One wrote: "this whole thread plays into the broader issue that many countries don't have – straight up fetishizing housing."

"Whilst you are right it's just posting pics, it's symptomatic of a broader issue in the country which is what separates us from other countries who all have the issues you listed above, but don't have insane prices like Aus[tralia]."

The original poster of the thread disagreed, writing, "Actually I think the reason why is probably a combination of...Record low-interest rates, easy availability of credit, tax incentives like negative gearing, population growth and immigration."

"I'd say 'a bunch of redditors posting pictures of houses for fun' is probably fairly low down on the list of why property prices will never collapse in this country."

Nevertheless – chicken vs. egg debate aside – it's hard to argue Australia's 'house porn' trend is not a symptom of a society obsessed with property.

Founder of The Rubinstein Group at Ray White, and one of the Eastern Suburbs' top performing real estate agents, Gavin Rubinstein, told DMARGE of the trend, "Generally speaking, everyone around here has an interest in property – whether they own it or whether they are aspiring to [own it]."

"Another reason would be property prices are relatively high and [buying a house] is a great avenue to build wealth," Rubinstein told DMARGE. "People are aware of that and as the market rises the economy changes, people just want to make sure they've made a good investment."

"Australian culture in general just has an interest in property."

That said, Rubinstein also told us that, to a great degree, house prices are "a hot topic everywhere" not just in Australia, as it is "such an important sector."

The r/ausfinance community is full of threads where users admit things like, "Sometimes I'll look up houses that I could never afford and/or in areas that I'd never feasibly be able to move to."

"I bought a new house 12 months ago and still look at house prices in the area just to make sure I got the best deal possible. It’s a weird obsession."

As if to prove the popularity of the topic, within seven days of the "what would $1 million get you?" question being posted, the thread has amassed nearly 300 comments, many of which come from other Australians heeding to the original poster's call to upload listings of sold properties that met the AU$1,000,000 criteria. We're sure they had an absolute field day browsing the listings of their local area, to see what sort of architectural masterpieces they could find.

In stark contrast to the Rose Bay apartment – stunning, though it may be – if you up sticks from Sydney and head north to Cairns, you could bag yourself something similar to this beachside mansion, complete with six bedrooms and three bathrooms for AU$1,085,000 (if you move closer to the CBD, however, expect prices for similar homes to rise).

The poster, deejay1974 adds, "For context, Cairns region (ie, its suburban area) has reasonable entry-level units and townhouses for $125-200K, and reasonable houses in the $350-500K range. Prices above that get you varying levels of 'extra' and/or beachside locations. (There is also cheaper, but you'll usually want cash to improve them). In Cairns city, which can be a market of its own, $1M will get you a 3 bed/2 bath waterside apartment with views."

Sydney's high prices – and penchant for quality, however ostentatious – are closely followed by Melbourne, with the former world's most liveable city also demanding prospective buyers part with large sums of cash if they want to be close to the hustle and bustle of the CBD, or just far enough removed to revel in everything suburbia has to offer.

Take this two-bedroom townhouse in Glen Iris, as a prime example. It hadn't even been built when it sold in November 2020 for $989,000. Sure, it offers the very latest in design, materials and fixtures and fittings and could easily be described and "pure, unadulterated house porn", but, as the poster says, "$1m for a 2 bed off the plan townhouse next door to a childcare center, on a fairly busy road." Mind-boggling.

What the Reddit thread ultimately confirms, is that if you value space and size, but don't have endlessly deep pockets, then you have no choice but to extend your search beyond the confines of a CBD. To do so also greatly enhances the chances of coming across homes that you simply want to admire, from both the outside and in, even when on a budget.

Not that that's a bad thing of course. Rural areas can present houses like this one, in WA's Margaret River, which offers six-bedrooms, parking for four cars and over 2,000 m2 of floor space, with $50,000 change from the $1 million budget.

Experts have attributed the snapping up of property in recent months to the global pandemic and the uncertainty it caused. In Australia at least, to help alleviate a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis, the RBA reduced interest rates to an unprecedented 0.10 per cent in November 2020.

Naturally, the national interest rate plays a huge part in someone's house buying decisions, and so the end of 2020 suddenly became considered a prime opportunity for Australian house hunters to score a pad for the first time.

As for the future: if Australia continues isolated from the rest of the world, prices across the board could remain (relatively) stable (or even fall). If business as usual resumes, however, the property market could start to skyrocket again (provided interest rates don't then jack up too hard alongside them). As ever, zones with limited supply and high demand will likely retain their value, even if Australia remains isolated from the world (or unless they suddenly lose their demand).

Happy house hunting.

The Curious Case Of Jamie Foxx’s ‘Faux Hermes’ Tracksuit

Jamie Foxx might just be the most brilliant man in Hollywood.

Actor, singer/songwriter, comedian, television presenter, record producer, entrepreneur... There are few celebrities as prolific or multi-talented as the 53-year-old Texan, who can't seem to put a foot wrong. Until today, it seems.

Posting on Instagram to help promote PrivĂ© Revaux – a sunglasses brand he co-founded that's fast become a favourite of celebrities like Cara Delevingne and Jennifer Lopez – Foxx shared a rather inspired outfit: a purple, monogrammed tracksuit under a black, fur-lined parka.

Here's the kicker: you'd think that an 'H' monogram would mean it's probably a Hermès piece, but Hermès doesn't make men's tracksuits. Indeed, we can't figure out where the tracksuit's from. So what's the deal – is it a fake?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jamie Foxx (@iamjamiefoxx)

If it was fake, he'd hardly be the first celebrity to be caught out wearing counterfeit luxury clothes or accessories. Jaden Smith and Justin Bieber have both been outed for wearing fake Louis Vuitton in the past, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson recently owned up to wearing a fake TAG Heuer watch in his youth.

Chances are it's not a fake – it's just not Hermès. We reckon the tracksuit's probably a bespoke job from Henry Couture, a Paris-based Nigerian tailoring outfit that's received co-signs from other celebrities like UK rapper Stormzy and South African TV personality Kat Sinivasan. With prices for their tracksuits in the 800 USD range, Henry Couture might not be Hermès but it's distinctly luxurious.

So settle down, style fans – Jamie Foxx isn't rocking anything fu-fu.

Foxx's most recent leading role as the voice of Joe Gardner in the Disney/Pixar animation Soul has been widely lauded. Released on Christmas Day and only on Disney's new streaming service, the 2020 film has broken streaming numbers and garnered critical acclaim.

Foxx is also set to star in the upcoming sports comedy flick All-Star Weekend, which he is also directing, as well as the upcoming as-of-yet untitled third Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man film.

Sergio Ramos Tests Injured Knee With Intense New Workout

Forget the rumours he's leaving Madrid this year. What matters right now is that Sergio Ramos is focussing on maintaining his world-class physique as a central defender, by working out like an absolute demon.

The Real Madrid captain, whose contract expires this summer, yesterday took to Instagram to showcase an innovative leg workout – one which will leave the lower appendages of any mere mortal brave enough to try it quivering for days.

"Training session finished and ready to watch my team play," Ramos captioned the video. In the clip, Ramos can be seen using three trampolines of varying inclines, set up in front of a vertically inclined crash mat, propped up against a wall.

A post shared by Sergio Ramos (@sergioramos)

If that sounds overly complicated... it gets worse (or at least, harder). Not only do you have to commandeer a section of your local gym large enough to set up your equipment like this, but you also have to actually do the workout.

If you have the stomach legs to mimic this bit, here's how to do it. Once you have set up your equipment as Ramos has above, repeatedly jump from the crash mat down to the middle trampoline, always starting on one leg and landing on the other.

Though the clip only shows Ramos working out one leg, it is advisable to then switch, building muscle (and stability) equally between your legs. This workout targets muscles such as the glutes, hamstrings, quads and calves, as well as your core.

Building brawn is crucial for protecting against knee injuries. Not only does this workout mimic the same kind of fall which commonly ruptures football and NBA players' ACL's (see: Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Derrick Rose), but it makes great sense in this instance because Ramos last month suffered a knee injury which saw him leave Real Madrid's January clash with Athletic Bilbao wrapped in a bandage and limping.

This would also explain why Ramos can be seen with a black supportive bandage around the knee he is training in the above video.

The 34-year-old legend must avoid a crucial (or cruciate) injury to his knee at all costs if he wants to continue in the upper echelons of the sport for as long as possible, following in the footsteps of the likes of 36-year-old Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini, who continues to defend against some of the best players in the world.

A post shared by Sergio Ramos (@sergioramos)

Though Swedish sensation Zlatan Ibrahimovic recently proved anything is possible with the right training and mindset, recovering from an ACL injury which he sustained playing for Manchester United in the English Premier League in 2017, spending a couple of years in America, and now playing again in the big leagues with AC Milan, he also proved how quickly a big club can drop you.

Speaking of the Red Devils, Ramos is rumoured to want to leave Real Madrid and join Manchester United at the end of this season, with Give Me Sport reporting, "The legendary centre-back's contract expires in the summer and it doesn't look as if the two parties will agree a new deal."

"Ramos joined Los Blancos from Sevilla in 2005 and has since established himself as one of the greatest defenders of all time... The 34-year-old has won 22 major trophies at the club, including five La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues."

"He's still one of the best in the business and should he depart the Spanish capital in due course, Real Madrid are really going to miss him."

So long as he continues providing us with workout inspiration, we wish him luck wherever he goes. The big question now is: which club has the financial muscle to pick up his alleged €24 million gross salary demand?

Post Malone Looks Surprisingly Dapper With ‘Imperial’ New Haircut

Post Malone is one of the music industry’s most unlikely success stories... As well as an unlikely men's style icon.

The boozy, vibrato-voiced rapper and singer/songwriter is easily one of the most popular hip-hop artists worldwide. Covered head to toe in tattoos and famously quite a grungy dude, Post Malone (real name Austin Post) also boasts one of the most unique fashion senses in the 'biz – just as home in a Western-style suit and cowboy hat as he is in baggy streetwear and slides. Hell, the dude even has his own collaboration with Crocs.

Speaking of brand collaborations, his latest one has also revealed a new look for the 25-year-old Texan. Posting to Instagram to promote energy drink brand Monster, Post showed off a new 'Caesar cut' hairdo, some big Gothic earrings and a Saint Laurent leather jacket while relaxing in the glow of a recording studio.

It's a surprisingly mature, dapper look for the sometimes very boyish rapper – and reveals how this once-maligned haircut is becoming cool once again.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by @postmalone

The Caesar cut, named after the look favoured by Ancient Roman emperors (but more commonly rocked by 'roadmen' and rascals across the Atlantic) enjoyed a brief style renaissance in the 90s, when it was rocked by celebrities like George Clooney and, rather appropriately, Eminem – another ludicrously famous white rapper.

In recent years, however, the Caesar cut has fallen by the wayside, with the most famous supporter of the hairdo being Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Zuck's version of the cut is notoriously awful, the billionaire even being publically roasted by a United States Congresswoman for his questionable style, Mashable reports.

RELATED: I Got Brad Pitt’s ‘Fight Club’ Haircut & Now I Deeply Regret It

But Post's new hairdo is no 'Zuck cut'. Instead, it's a masterclass in how to execute the Caesar cut properly. It frames his face nicely, not exposing too much forehead, and has a nice, blended edge. Post's nicely trimmed facial hair compliments the haircut well too: it makes him look youthful, but not boyish, which is the big trap the Caesar cut can fall into (case in point Zuck). Although Post's huge number of face tattoos means he's unlikely to even be confused with a schoolboy no matter what follicles he's rocking...

While he appeared on a smattering of singles last year – such as Justin Bieber's Forever and Ozzy Osbourne's It's A Raid – Post hasn't released any new music since his 2019 album Hollywood's Bleeding. Instead, it seems he's been focused on his side hustle, making wine: he recently announced that his successful rosé brand, Maison No. 9, is now available in the UK. Fingers crossed it comes Down Under, too (and that we might see some new music from him in 2021).

Million Dollar Ute Sale Suggests Bogan Car Mania Not Slowing Down Any Time Soon

They say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" – particularly when it comes to the Australian used car market.

In the same way that vintage comics regularly fetch higher prices than medieval textbooks and sun-damaged vintage Rolexes can be worth more than immaculate ones, grotty 'bogan' cars are becoming the hottest commodities for Australian car collectors. Forget European luxury or JDM tech wizardry – after years of being ignored, the next big thing in car investment is your suburban Aussie station wagons, fast sedan-based utes and bogan block beaters. A bogan car renaissance, if you will.

This trend has only accelerated with the end of local vehicle manufacturing, and indeed the two iconic Australian marques – Ford and Holden – added their own fuel to that fire by releasing a slew of suped-up, 'final edition' vehicles that were some of the most refined, good-looking and powerful vehicles this country has ever produced.

And if you think the average price of an 80s bogan beater has seen insane speculation, wait until you see the prices that these 'final edition' local legends are commanding.

The Internet has been set aflame in recent weeks by a particular bogan beauty that just went under the hammer with Lloyds Auctions – a 2017 HSV GTSR W1 Maloo ute. With only 618km on the clock and in mint condition, a high price was always to be expected.

The auction wrapped up this afternoon with the winning bid coming in at a whopping 1,050,000 AUD (~802,400 USD). Just let that sink in. A ridgy-didge Aussie ute, going for more than a new, top-of-the-line Rolls-Royce Ghost.

[caption id="attachment_280267" align="alignnone" width="800"] You'd be crazy to take this down to the work site. Image: Lloyds Auctions[/caption]

It's a lot of money, considering that at the end of the day, it's still just a ute: a tradie's vehicle, not some piece of precision European wankery. But it's not just any ute. It's the ultimate ute, and arguably the ultimate Australian car. Let us explain.

HSV, or Holden Special Vehicles, was the brand's in-house performance division from 1987 to the end of local production in 2017. While they occasionally turned their attention to imported models – such as the Belgium-made fifth-gen Holden Astra or the second-gen Holden Jackaroo (really a Japanese Isuzu Trooper), HSV were best known for taking Commodores or Utes and turning them into fire-breathing monsters.

HSV celebrated the end of the VF Commodore with the bonkers GTSR W1 model, which made 474kW thanks to its 6.2L LS9 supercharged V8, the same engine that went into the C6 Corvette ZR1. The GTSR W1 is the fastest and most powerful car Australia has ever produced (or will produce, seeing as local manufacturing is dead).

RELATED: Expert’s Big Warning For Australians Buying ‘Orphan’ Second Hand Cars

300 GTSR W1s were made, making them rare and desirable things, but HSV secretly made a handful of GTSR Maloo W1s as well, WhichCar relates – of which this ute under auction is an example:

"[HSV] wasn’t actively hiding the cars but simply chose not to publicise their existence... it’s understood the owners were required to sign contracts promising their silence before, during and after the build process."

Essentially, this Maloo is the rarest version of the best and last car Australia ever made, with a smoke-and-daggers backstory and a functional ute tray to boot. Now that crazy final price makes a little more sense.

[caption id="attachment_280265" align="alignnone" width="800"] Like a Corvette but cooler. Image: Lloyds Auctions[/caption]

While this car will always be special as the last in a long line of suped-up factory hot-rod utes, it will be interesting to see if in a few decades' time it will hold its value, or if 'bogan mania' will subside. Or maybe collectors will decide that another car is the ultimate bogan investment.

If we had to make a prediction, we'd say the VG-generation HSV Maloo is ripe for future speculation: as the GTSR W1 Maloo was the very last ute HSV worked on, the VG-generation Maloo was the very first, so it's got that historical significance factor. But that's just us thinking out loud...

RELATED: Secret To Finding ‘Diamond In The Rough’ Classic & Second Hand Cars In Australia

The Holden brand is being retired completely in 2021, with HSV transforming into General Motors Special Vehicles. GMSV will focus on importing and converting US-built cars like the Camaro, Corvette and Silverado truck, although it remains to be seen if they'll do their own performance modifications, too.

Holden's great rival Ford isn't going anywhere, but the grass isn't exactly greener on the other side. The Blue Oval is discontinuing the sale of passenger cars in North America and culling most of their model range Down Under too, with only the Focus and Mustang standing out in a sea of SUVs (the Fiesta is still available, but only in ST guise).

Thankfully for Ford, the Ranger ute is selling well – but it's no Falcon XR6 Ute. And it's certainly no GTSR W1 Maloo, like this million-dollar miracle. We just hope it'll actually get driven every once in a while...

‘All American’ Style Tipped To Take 2021 By Storm

2020 wasn't a particularly great year for fashion, with The Spicy Cough affecting nearly every facet of the fashion industry: supply lines, the viability of seasonal collections, runway shows, consumer confidence... Just about the only fashion item that has really been popping off has been face masks, with many brands scrambling to produce their own PPE since the start of the pandemic.

Now, at the start of 2021, where we find ourselves with a number of viable vaccine candidates being gradually rolled out across the world and the global mood becoming more positive, fashion insiders are waiting with bated breath to see what the next breakout trend will be.

Of course, no-one has a crystal ball. But there's a style that's been steadily gaining momentum over the last few years that's noticeably accelerated over the last few months – with even haute couture labels paying attention and keen to craft collaborations that can harness this growing aesthetic.

The style in question? 80s Americana. And we've got all the right ingredients brewing to make Americana the style that defines 2021.

Let's start by trying to nail down what 80s Americana is. The United States, as the world's predominant cultural and economic superpower, has always had an outsized influence on the fashion world. Quintessential items of modern fashion such as denim jeans, browline glasses and bomber jackets are all American inventions, and many of the world's most influential fashion brands are American. But you probably already know that.

The 2010s was a decade defined by streetwear. Influenced by hip-hop, the 90s and revolving around athleisure brands, streetwear is also quintessentially American... And has also arguably reached its peak. When you've got even highly traditional haute couture names like Burberry, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton jumping onto the streetwear trend, you know it's basically mainstream. The way the wind's blowing is that the 80s (and even the 70s) are becoming far more of an influence on 2020s fashion – funny how these fashion cycles work.

One of the few big fashion trends of 2020 was people investing in quality, comfortable basics over more formal or trendy styles during the COVID-19 crisis – quite an old-school mentality, all things considered. This is why 80s Americana is poised for further success – because the brands that define the aesthetic are brands that place a premium on quality.

RELATED: Is Fashion F*cked? Experts Reveal Who Will Come Out On Top Post Pandemic

It's likely that consumers' buying habits will continue to remain rather conservative into 2021, which will mean people will choose to invest in more timeless pieces. And 80s style is certainly pretty timeless...

Let's put it this way: if classic Americana is preppy and owes more to the 50s (your Ralph Laurens and Sperry Top-Siders) and streetwear is flashy and is inspired by the 90s (your Nikes, Off-Whites and Supremes) then 80s Americana is more rugged; more Western. Think workwear brands like Carhartt, Levi's or Stan Ray, and timeless staples like Converses, Ray-Bans or Pendleton knits.

For further inspiration (and evidence of how the trend is taking root), just look at these recent fashion collaborations for a sense of what the aesthetic is like.

[caption id="attachment_281369" align="alignnone" width="849"] Clockwise from top left: Levi's x BAPE; Jared Leto in The North Face x Gucci; Supreme, Travis Scott x McDonalds and Nike x Sacai; Rhude x McLaren.[/caption]

The other reason that Americana is on the way back in is that with Joe Biden's election as President of the United States, there's already a newfound sense of optimism about America's future and a renewed willingness to engage with American culture – both within and outside the United States. Dressing like Bruce Springsteen is cool again, basically.

RELATED: Joe Biden Surprises Watch Spotters With New ‘Presidential’ Purchase

It's worth pointing out that there's a big difference between Americana and American-made. Many brands that champion that old-school American aesthetic aren't American at all – for example, Japanese brands like Human Made and BAPE (both founded by legendary designer Nigo); Palm Angels, which is Italian; or Wood Wood, which is Norwegian,

Oh, and if you're looking for some inspiration for the aesthetic, look to celebrities like Johannes Huebl, Paul Bettany and Tyler, the Creator, who've all been pushing the style for years.

Reddit Thread Provides Refreshingly Honest Advice For Modern Singles

Aside from all the negativity caused by the global pandemic: a halt on international travel, tenants being kicked out of their homes and a colleague attempting to pull off Chelsea boots, we can actually have much to thank it for.

It has given us a chance to reset, to reassess and reevaluate our lives and what we want from them, and that includes our relationships. Yes, 2020 made dating nigh-on impossible – the first few weeks of 2021 thus far haven't been amazing, by any means – forcing many to turn to online dating apps or to come up with genius new ways of seducing a romantic interest.

RELATED: ‘Thought Provoking’ Quote Could Change Your Perspective On 2020 Forever

In relation to reevaluating our dating and relationship goals, it's often been said that you need to be happy with yourself before you even think about getting into a committed relationship. But, while we may have always known or assumed what it actually meant to be happy with ourselves, one Reddit thread poses a whole new interpretation.

Posted by user ScarySpot7, they say:

"I never got why people keep saying why you should learn to be happy alone and being single before you get into a relationship with somebody else. But somebody finally explained it to me."

"It's so if you get into a bad relationship then you won't be like 'Well, being single is worse so I should just stick it out' and then you end up regretting much of your life before you wisen up."

"[Instead] you're just like 'being single is better than being with this person' and so you leave."

One user adds how they – and we imagine, how many of us – used to interpret the same ideal.

"I always thought it meant that if you're happy, then people will find you more attractive, like, someone isn't going to want to date you just to be the only good thing in your life."

Of course, the two can certainly be intertwined;

"I would also add that as a male, functioning as a confident individual and having goals makes you more attractive to females. Therefore, learning to be happy on your own can actually cause more relationships to happen", adds another user.

However, on the topic of confidence and its effect on your dating life, unless you've got pockets as deep as Conor McGregor and have the time to meditate aboard your luxury yacht, you're consistently vulnerable to attack from others, especially online.

Adding weight to this argument is fresh data compiled by dating app Bumble, that found a staggeringly high proportion of survey respondents had been on the receiving end of derogatory comments.

Announcing an update to its terms and conditions in response to the survey, Bumble will now ban any users who make "unsolicited and derogatory comments made about someone's appearance, body shape, size or health. This includes language that can be deemed fat-phobic, ableist, racist, colourist, homophobic or transphobic."

In a survey of over 1,400 Australians carried out in January 2021, 45 per cent said: "someone they have dated had made an unsolicited comment about their body either in person or online."

64 per cent agreed that others are more likely to make these unsolicited comments online – presumably because they have a virtual 'shield' to hide behind – and a huge 82 per cent of the survey group believed they are "more likely to feel physically judged while dating compared to other areas in life."

To combat any unwanted comments within the app, Bumble has implemented technology that will automatically detect any comments or images that go against its guidelines, and if necessary, will be passed on to a human moderator.

Australian Motoring Expert Subtly Reveals This Decades’ Must Have Car

Investing in cars is like playing the stock market. It's unpredictable and complicated but you stand the chance of making a tidy profit for yourself – or losing money hand over foot.

Predicting what cars are likely to become 'future classics' or even just going to resist depreciation isn't straight-forward. The car market, like fashion, is fickle and cyclical. One only has to look at the 'bogan car renaissance' currently gripping Australia: cars that were once considered the height of uncool are now becoming incredibly desirable. On the flipside, even highly-acclaimed and popular modern cars like the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ pair or the Nissan R35 GT-R have suffered from crippling depreciation.

The question is this: what's a fun, practical daily driver that'll hold its value well into the future? Well, one Australian motoring expert's latest purchase is a big hint: a car that has not only garnered significant critical acclaim but has resisted depreciation even in the short three years it's been on the market.

Supercar Blondie (real name Alex Hirschi) is one of the Internet's most successful influencers. Originally from Brisbane but now a resident of Dubai, the ex-radio show host now makes a living reviewing and showing off high-end automobiles across her social media platforms, boasting over 8.4 million followers on Instagram alone.

Earlier this month, Hirschi shared a video of her gifting her husband (an ex-banker, another car nut and her manager as well) a rather inspired Christmas present: a 2021 Suzuki Jimny. While he seemed rapt about the gift, many of Hirschi's fans questioned the purchase. "She got him a Suzuki... after she chills in exotics all day? Yeah I’m filing for divorce," one commenter joked.

It might seem weird but there's some method to her madness. Indeed, the new Suzuki Jimny might just be the best car you could possibly receive as a gift – and a serious contender for the best car of the decade.

The fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny was launched in 2018, replacing the venerable third-generation model which had enjoyed a 20-year-long production run. While the external design of the new Jimny was a radical departure from previous models – resembling a baby Jeep Wrangler – the car remained true to the Jimny formula underneath: simple, hardy, with serious off-road credentials to back up its 'butch' look.

The Jimny has always been an outlier in a market that's dominated by big, thirsty boy's toys. It's small, not very powerful, and quite spartan. But that's also why it's loved by serious 4x4 fans: it's inexpensive yet highly capable straight out of the box; legendarily reliable and regularly shows up other machines off the beaten track. It's also great around town because of its tiny size and fuel efficiency (unlike most 4x4s), meaning it's a real car for all people.

Perhaps that's why the third and fourth-gen Jimnys have been dark horses in the depreciation stakes, too. Despite its aforementioned lengthy production run, third-gen Jimnys hold their value remarkably well. The cheapest third-gen Jimny on Carsales right now is listed for just under $5k, with good examples asking as much as $30k. Pretty impressive considering that they retailed for just over $20k only five years ago... And the new Jimny retails for $25,990 to $27,990.

When it comes to fourth-gen Jimnys, it's more about supply. Dealerships across the country (and internationally, too) can't keep up with demand, with waiting lists for new Jimnys rivalling those for European luxury cars. So if you want to get your hands on a new Jimny, you need to hit the classifieds – and expect to pay a premium. The cheapest fourth-gen on Carsales is listed for $35k, and prices go as high as $50k – almost double the RRP!

Hirschi's gift to her husband is looking more and more like a smart move.

Recent reports that Suzuki is expanding Jimny production to India as well as introducing a five-door model might take some of the heat out of the fourth-gen market. Australian-spec Jimnys are likely to continue to be sourced from Japan, although the Indian production line could see reduced wait times as it shoulders some of the global demand from the stretched Japanese plant, WhichCar reports.

But if the third-gen Jimny's anything to go off, fourth-gens will likely remain solid little investments into the foreseeable future, especially considering it's a much more liveable car: it's got a modern infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; practical flat-folding rear seats and plenty of cabin storage; a whole suite of safety features including autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, electronic stability control, high beam assist and more... Plus it looks really cool (which is just as important).

In short, it's an underrated little car that has all the right ingredients to be a future classic; a decade-defining vehicle. That a millionaire like Hirschi would invest in one is telling.

"He's been saying for so long 'I just want a car that I can grab the dogs out them in go to the park do my errands in'... basically he doesn't want to rack up any miles on the Rolls-Royce or the McLaren," Hirschi explains. "He takes cabs everywhere, [so I was] like what are you doing – you need a runabout car, and he always talks about the Jimny, so there you go."

Must be nice.
