Sound the trumpets, rally the boys, grab the Pimm’s, as it is finally swimming short season. In the UK there’s only a short amount of time where we can get our chicken legs out and finally enjoy the heat. That time is finally here, so you need to get a pair of trusty swimming shorts to take full advantage of the situation. But what are the best swimming shorts for men? What length should your swimming shorts be? And is there ever a time for budgie smugglers? (That’s going to be a hard no on that last one). Here we’ll dive right in and answer all your questions with our biggest swimwear do’s and don’ts, so you’re beach ready.
Men’s Swimwear Don’ts
Board Shorts – These are not a suitable option. Ten years ago maybe you would have gotten away with it, if your mum bought your summer wardrobe from a catalogue. Or a early 00’s surfer? Basically, the baggy ¾ lengths do no need any space in your suitcase this summer.
Garish patters – Being in the sun means people are most likely wearing sunglasses. However, this doesn’t mean neon bright patterns are acceptable. Though we’re all for statement swimming trunks that show off a pattern, pick a pair that are subtle and classy. Neon is a no.
Shapeless Shorts – Wearing baggy unattractive shoes is no longer the fashion (and was it ever?) We don’t all have a Greek God physique (my mum says I do) but we can improve our look with clothing that fits us correctly. Yes, even your swimwear should fit properly. If you are blessed with large thighs go a size up, shorts should not be tight. On the flip side if you’re on the skinny end of the scale don’t opt for baggy shorts, go for something slim and fitted these will be more flattering.
Speedo’s – I don’t care if it’s a lad’s holiday or even a stag do. It’s still not fun for anyone to wear speedos around the pool – especially if you’re the one wearing the speedos. Leave some things for the imagination and leave the budgie smugglers at home.
Men’s Swimwear Do’s
Pastel Colours – When the cold weather finally leaves us that means it’s time to leave the dark clothing behind as well. Opt for pastel coloured shorts in blues, greens and pinks. They will help accent your tan (if you’ve got one that is).
Go Shorter – When shopping for shorts a good rule to go by is the hem should fall a few inches above the knee. If you’re a guy who’s been working on leg day, why not be brave and go for something shorter? Show your hard work off.
Pack Different Styles – We are all guilty of finding a style we like and sticking to it. But this is not always practical. You may spend days on the beach which implies you’ll need your mobile phone and some cash, so shop practically for the shorts with zip pockets and then for the pool you can opt for a sleeker design.
